When someone who is morbidly obese applies for disability benefits, the question immediately arises: is obesity a covered benefit for disability? This is a tricky subject, because obesity itself is not covered as a category of disability. However, the adjunct effects of obesity — high blood pressure, heart conditions, potentially lethal sleep apnea, etcetera — these are covered benefits. So, just on the basis of obesity alone, one would not be eligible for disability benefits. But if obesity is causing related health problems that prevent someone from working or having a relatively good quality of life, they may be eligible for disability benefits. They may also be eligible for such items as a CPAP machine to help nighttime breathing problems. Good luck!
